Economic Impact

Millions of tourists a year ride the Staten Island Ferry, depart the boat on Staten Island, and immediately take the next boat back to Manhattan. The Staten Island community has, for decades, wrestled with how to get these visitors to stay in Staten Island and visit the local shops, eateries and cultural institutions. The New York Wheel, Empire Outlets and Lighthouse Point projects will encourage those visitors, having disembarked from the Staten Island Ferry, to visit and explore all that St. George and the surrounding area has to offer.

The construction of the New York Wheel will create approximately 350 union construction jobs and 600 permanent jobs. Strong commitments have been made to hire locally and utilize WMBE owned businesses. New York Wheel is using 100% union labor for the construction of the site. New York Wheel supports many Staten Island Community organizations such as Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens, The St. George Theater and Staten Island Museum.

The New York Wheel project was proposed by New York Wheel LLC in response to the New York City Economic Development Corp's request for bids for projects that would increase economic growth, boost tourism, and create jobs on Staten Island.

Destination St. George

  • The New York Wheel will be transformative for the North Shore and for this borough. It is quite rare for a project to singlehandedly usher in a new day for a community, but the Wheel can. When you then combine it with the other great things that will be happening nearby, well, this is a special moment in time for Staten Island.

  • We expect the New York Wheel, Empire Outlets and new hotel to give visitors even more reasons to enjoy the diverse cultural offerings, recreational opportunities and excellent dining options of Staten Island as part of a New York City experience.

  • The New York Wheel will undoubtedly become a new landmark in New York City, attracting visitors from all over, providing economic growth and a new visibility.

  • The New York Wheel is destined to become one of the City's - and the world's - great landmark attractions. We believe that the Wheel will quickly become an iconic fixture and we are proud and excited to bring it to Staten Island, New York City, and the Tri-State area.
